چکیده

A proteolipid protein having a high affinity for methyl (14)C-hexamethonium, (3)H-p-(trimethylammonium)-benzene diazonium fluoroborate, and (acetyl-1-(14)C)choline chloride was isolated and purified from the electric tissue of Torpedo marmorata and Electrophorus electricus. At variance with the "receptor proteolipid" from the brain the one from electric tissue apparently does not bind atropine sulfate.

Conductance Properties of Artificial Lipidic Membranes Containing a Proteolipid from Electrophorus

Previous studies have shown that a special proteolipid extract from the electric organ of Electrophorus showed high affinity binding for acetylcholine and other cholinergic agents. This proteolipid has now been incorporated into ultrathin lipidic membranes, and the membrane resistance was studied. The resistance decreased from 7.27 +/- 0.82 x 10(5) ohm cm(2) in the control membrane to 1.83 x 10...

The historical significance of work with electric organs for the study of cholinergic transmission.

The historical significance of work with electric organs for the development of electrobiology and our understanding of the cholinergic synapse at the cell and molecular biological level is traced from its earliest beginning in folk medicine, through the controversy on bioelectricity between Galvani and Volta to the present day, the last decades of which have seen the sequencing of the nicotini...

Effect of the cholinergic and opioid receptor mechanisms on nicotine-induced analgesia

In this study, we investigated the effect of nicotinic receptor agonists and antagonists on the analgesic response to morphine in the formalin test. In experiments conducted in mice, nicotine produced an early dose-dependent analgesic effect. At a dose of 0.5 mg/kg, mecamylamine, a nicotinic receptor inhibitor, suppressed the analgesic effect induced by 0.1 mg/kg nicotine in both stages of th...

Presence of prejunctional D2-dopaminoceptors and α2-adrenoceptors on the cholinergic nerve of the common bile duct of guinea pig

On most adrenergic and cholinergic nerve terminals, prejunctional α-adrenoceptors belonging to the α2-subtype have been identified. Activation of these receptors will decrease the release of norepinephrine. It has been reported that several isolated tissue preparations contain prejunctional dopamine receptors, the stimulation of which inhibits neurotransmission. It has remained uncertain whethe...

Cholinergic Receptor Sensitivity Following Pharmacological Modulation of the Immune System

Objective. To study the effect of immunomodulators on learning and memory and on cholinergic receptor sensitivity. Methods. Animals were initially treated for a period of 8 days with cyclosporine/levamisole/saline. They were then subjected to passive avoidance training and 48 hrs later, the retention test for the passive avoidance task was conducted. Twenty-four hours after the retention tests ...
